World Open Data Day: a boost to the Sustainable Development Goals
Open Data Day will be celebrated between March 2 and 8, 2024, a celebration organized worldwide with the aim of getting different working groups, public administrations and civic organizations to join forces to make open data the main protagonist, promoting and using open data in their communities.
This year, the theme will be "Open Data to Drive the Sustainable Development Goals" (SDGs). Following the recognition of CKAN (Comprehensive Knowledge Archive Network, an open source data management system) as a digital public good, 2024 will explore how open data is a key player in helping to achieve the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Open Data Day is led by theOpen Knowledge Foundation (OKFN) andthis year's edition is co-organized by Jokkolabs Banjul (The Gambia), Open Knowledge Germany, Open Knowledge Ghana and Open Knowledge Nepal, all members of the Open Knowledge Network. As a way to increase the representation of different cultures, the Open Data Day 2024website lists more than a hundred events registered internationally.
With this celebration, open data adheres to the objectives of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, approved in 2015 by the UN General Assembly, which established the priority points in global development in the area of justice, human rights, social inclusion, prosperity and environment .
In this context, the report "SupportingSustainable Development through Open Data" identified three main fields in which open data could have a relevant impact and contribute to meeting the goals set by the UN: improving development programs and economic aid; monitoring progress in thefight against corruption; and contributing to innovation, job creation and economic growth.
How to contribute to Sustainable Development
Specifically, the opening of relevant data allows administrations and organizations to improve development and economic aid programs by making more informed decisions on the allocation of resources that benefit society and the environment .
Inaddition, open data is a key source of transparency and accountability. By exposing information on administrative expenditures, activities and contracts, it is possible to act in a more agile way to detect and prevent corruption.
At the same time, open data contributes to economic growth and job creation by enabling companies, researchers and entrepreneurs to use this data to develop innovative solutions.
The UN itself has created a series of indicators and statistical data, aimed at monitoring progress and reporting on the policies developed, and the World Bank Group has launched an interactive Atlas that shows the international situation, based on data from World Development Indicators.
Spain: fifth world power in open data dissemination
Spain arrives at this celebration ranked as the fifth world power in the dissemination of open data, according to the latest OURdatareport from the OECD. The Open-Useful-Reusable Government Data Index (OURdata) compares the efforts made by different countries to design and implement national policies. In the 2023 edition, which ranks Spain in fifth place, it analyzes more than 670 data indicators collected from 36 OECD countries and 4 accession countries.
OURdata aimsto support countries in driving open data policies. It analyzes and measures indicators related to three key pillars: data availability, data accessibility and government support for data reuse.
The Cabildo de Tenerife's drive to open data
The Cabildo de Tenerife, aware of the potential of open data, is making a great effort both in the dissemination of data through its portal and in raising awareness and familiarization of public opinion. The dissemination in social networks and Youtube of the work developed is making an essential contribution to the knowledge of open data and its possibilities.
The data of the portal of the Cabildo de Tenerife are federated with the portal of the Government of the Canary Islands datos.canarias.es and with the state portal datos.gob.es. The federation of data makes it possible to broaden its dissemination and make it more accessible for consultation and reuse, helping to strengthen its presence.
The Cabildo de Tenerife is, after the Instituto Canario de Estadística ( ISTAC), the organization that adds the most datasets to the portal of the Canary Islands Government.
